Food Safety at the Greater Boston Food Bank

Kendra Bird, the Director of Nutrition for The Greater Boston Food Bank (GBFB), is responsible for the safety of nearly 40 million pounds of food that passes through the facility annually. GBFB is the largest hunger-relief organization in New England and among the largest food banks in the country. Kendra oversees menu and recipe design for the Kids Cafe program, which coordinates with the local Boys & Girls Clubs to feed 1,500 disadvantaged children dinner five nights of the week. She divides her time between nutrition education, food safety, and nutrition analysis of the massive quantity of food that passes through GBFB. Food safety education is integral to the mission of GBFB, and ensures nutritious food options for half a million people in need each year.

BAC Fighter Survey Results

The Partnership for Food Safety Education Supports Health Educators

BAC Fighter Survey Results

In June, the Partnership for Food Safety Education surveyed BAC Fighters to see how they use Fight BAC! materials and the level of engagement that BAC Fighters want with the Partnership. We learned a lot from the over 780 responses we received! One highlight of the survey - 98.6% of respondents viewed the Partnership as being supportive of food safety education. We also learned that a vast majority of BAC Fighters use fightbac.org. Most BAC Fighters would be interested in future webinars and other educational programming too. A majority of BAC Fighters work to educate others on the importance of safe food handling. As the Partnership works to support BAC Fighters in the field, we will use this survey to make sure we are best meeting the needs of BAC Fighters. Thank you for your work in health education towards our shared mission – to eliminate illness and death from foodborne infection in the U.S.

National Turkey Federation: Safely Enjoy Poultry on the Grill

The Partnership for Food Safety Education collaborated with the National Turkey Federation (NTF) on an e-card reminding consumers and food safety educators about safely enjoying poultry products on the grill. The e-card went out to more than 13,000 BAC Fighters (food safety educators) on June 12, 2012. BAC Fighters were lead to several resources for teaching, including a video and a webpage on safe summer grilling, and were reminded to always cook poultry products to 165 °F.  NTF, a long-time supporter and partner, sponsored the e-card.  Have a safe, tasty summer grilling season while Fighting BAC!®
